Becoming a Licensed Family Child Care Provider in Maryland

15 May 2014

Acquiring a license is not as easy as one, two and three. You need to follow certain steps to make sure that your child care business will be a success.

Family child care is regulated by the law under the Code of Maryland regulations COMAR 13A.15 wherein the provider is required to get a certificate of registration or a license prior to operation. This is to ensure that all the providers operating meet the child’s health and safety requirements.

When applying for a license, first thing to do is to contact the OCC Regional Licensing Office in your area who is going to process your application, inspection and issuing certificate of registration. Let them know that you are interested on becoming a registered or licensed provider. Next step is to attend and complete two orientation sessions that will be scheduled by the regional licensing office. There will be a pre-service training afterwards wherein the provider will need to complete 24 hours of approved training on the topics related to child care.

Childs health and safety are also inspected prior to license issuance. Make sure that your home or the location where you are planning to build your facility is free from any form of hazard including equipments. There should also be installed equipments which will help the child’s development. The facility will be inspected by for fire safety and other required inspections including health and safety compliance.

Once your facility is able to pass the inspections and all the requirements have been completed, Certificate of Registration will be issued and you are now ready to open your child care facility.
