Hello!

My name is Shyama – I’m a recent SMU graduate and theatre professional with a love for kids and family.

I have experience with children in many different settings! As a teenager, I took the Red Cross babysitting course as soon as I was eligible because I couldn’t wait to help out my neighbors with their kids. I was a regular babysitter for my neighbors’ toddler during middle school and high school – I loved helping out with very young children, especially, because they grow and change so quickly. It was a blessing to be able to be part of her life so early and to see how she’s grown since then!

Later in high school, I volunteered as a theatre teacher for Plano ISD’s PEP Summer School program where I worked with elementary-aged children in an educational setting. This sparked a real interest for me in using my own creative work in theatre as a medium to help children communicate, express themselves, and work together as a team.

In college, I worked at Plano ISD’s Starpower camp for middle schoolers where I served both as a guest director for a small group of students and as the acting teacher for the entire program. The joys and challenges of working with older children were very compelling to me – I especially loved seeing the ways that older children needed a creative outlet as their classwork and home lives became more stressful. My primary takeaway from this was that children of all ages crave connection and expression and that my skillset is particularly well-suited to helping them do this.

I grew up in a tight-knit neighborhood with lots of children and have found that I sincerely miss being around families and children. In the months since graduating college with a BFA in Theatre Studies and a minor in Religious Studies, I have been an occasional babysitter for a three-year-old girl, Cora, and am looking for more opportunities to help out with kids where I can!

Additionally, I worked as a COVID-19 tester for several months this past year, during which I obtained my Basic Life Support Certification. As such, I am certified by the American Heart Association in child and adult CPR, AED use, and choking prevention and rescue.

If you think I might be a good fit for your family, please reach out!! I would love to speak with you more.
