Teaching and studying college psychology for 30 years enabled me to be a better parent, applying what psychology research has discovered as “best practices”. Being positive, supportive, affectionate, attentive, being consistent (very important), always talking and explaining the world to them, no physical punishment, and so on. This seemed to be a strategy as my children are kind, loving, successful adults. Besides, l always loved children, loved listening to them, talking to them, getting their often refreshing perspective on things. Children usually like me as well because I am so interested and listen to them. My most recent job was for a baby two months old when I started, on until she was nine months old. I enjoyed her so much and still miss her.
Also, I lost my mother at age 18, leaving me, the oldest, to take on major responsibilities including the care of a five year old brother. He, of course, needed lots of love and attention, especially since our father sank into a depression that lasted more or less the rest of his life.
