Hello! My name is Emily, and I cant wait to foster creative, thoughtful play with your child! Im currently an art teacher at Philly Art Center, and Im looking to continue my growth as a caretaker outside of the classroom.

I discovered the joy of working with kids at my previous job, Echo Hill Outdoor School, where I cared for groups of kids (ages 5-12) in the rural landscape by the Chesapeake bay, in Worton, MD. I would plan and teach classes on a variety of subjects and experiences, including ecology, wilderness skills, conservationism, personal growth, and team building, before returning with the kids to our open air tent, where we would camp together overnight. This unique environment taught me the value of experiential and Montessori education, which forever changed my approach to teaching and childcare; truly allowing me to blossom as a teacher and caretaker.

As an art teacher, these values inform everything about how I lead my class and interact with students. At the Philly Art Center, I teach mostly pre-k to 1st grade, which is the range where I really shine as a teacher! I love to facilitate exciting art lessons where everyone feels totally safe and free to express themselves creatively, free from judgement and restriction. At this young age especially, this loving environment creates a valuable space in which kids are really receptive to looking at their feelings (sometimes elation, sometimes frustration, etc) from a new perspective, as well as building interpersonal skills in an environment outside of school or home.
Even before I became a teacher, I knew I was meant to work with kids. I have 6 brothers and sisters, and growing up with them is an experience I wouldnt trade for the world! It gave me the chance to care for kids of every age and stage, and made it a strong habit to engage with children from a place of loving care.

My goal is to foster this experiential, loving, open space outside of the classroom setting, and build relationships one on one with kids where Im able to give them my undivided attention and care, and enrich their time outside of school, using my skills as a teacher. I would love to learn what brings your child joy, and to incorporate those things into the time we spend together and the activities we choose!

Im more than happy to do housekeeping tasks, and to prepare meals and snacks (I fancy myself quite the cook!). I also love pets :) I live in the fairmount area (right by Bache Martin).
