To have pride, respect and responsibility for ourselves and our community: UMOJA means UNITY! The mission of UMOJA Head Start Academy is to promote unity within the program, staff, parents, children, families and the community. Head Start is foremost a family centered program.

In carrying out our mission, UMOJA Head Start Academy strives to empower children. We do this by helping them to meet the challenges in their present environment, as well as preparing them to meet responsibilities in school and life. This process involves the childs entire family and UMOJA Head Start Academys community working as one to meet the familys physical, mental, and nutritional needs.

Program Goals

  • To ensure that the school and home environment support children in their cognitive, social, emotional and physical development.
  • To provide parents with opportunities to participate in their childs development by including parents in all areas of the Head Start program.
  • To present a program in partnership with the Harlem Park Sandtown/Winchester communities that demonstrates our commitment to assist in. becoming more productive and empowered neighborhoods.
  • To provide positive community intervention programs improving the quality of life for socio-economically disadvantaged children and families.

Special Needs:
Ten (10) percent of the available enrollment slots are reserved for children with disabilities. UMOJA Head Start Academy offers a continuum of services to meet the needs of children with disabilities and special needs. UMOJA Head Start Academy will work closely with parents and Baltimore City Public Schools to assure that children with special needs receive screenings and assessments leading to the development of an appropriate Individual Education Plan (a legal document). Children with disabilities are an integral part of all classroom activities.

The philosophy of UMOJA Head Start Academy ensures head start children a healthy and cheerful individual learning environment. We offer individual education plans through an emphasis on play. The program also offers an opportunity for the child to develop physically, intellectually, socially and emotionally. Special activities are planned for the child to function freely and to explore and experiment in the early childhood environment to improve his/her learning. The learning environment is a joyous, lively and fun loving place, which maintains an atmosphere of the acceptance of each child utilizing space, furniture and equipment appropriate for the children. Learning experiences will take place in the center which facilitates individual and group interaction and home-based curriculum activities.

Unity is the key to all UMOJA Head Start Academy activities and experiences. The UMOJA Head Start Academy staff will represent well trained, highly competent individuals dedicated to the service mission statement To promote unity within the classroom, the home, and the community.
