The child is the focus of attention at the Bronx Community College Early Childhood Center. Our curriculum is based on age-appropriate practices for young children. Our philosophy lies in our respect for the specialties of young children and our genuine delight in the unfolding wonders of their growth and development. We cherish every child and realize that each child is different and unique and therefore the intent of our curriculum is to offer diverse opportunities for learning.
Research has shown that young children learn best through active exploration and interaction with adults children and materials. In particular children learn when they initiate and direct their own play activities. We give children an opportunity to choose from a variety of activities materials equipment and time to explore these through active involvement.
The role of teachers in our classroom is unlike teachers in our own childhood where a teachers source of knowledge seemed like an infinite fountain of knowledge. As children are motivated to make sense of their world teachers share in that process of discovery. The teachers role in the classrooms is to plan and prepare a stimulating environment in which children are challenged to learn through active exploration and interaction. A teachers thoughtful input at the right time can advance a childs competence and challenge a childs thinking. It is by the systematic use of childrens experiences that teachers can extend childrens knowledge and build their capabilities.
