The Highway Nursery School adheres to the child development approach basing its philosophy of teaching the whole child with special consideration of physical cognitive social emotional and moral domains of child development. Implicit to our philosophy is that each of these domains affects the others and that children must be provided with experiences which foster this interrelatedness. It is also fundamental to our philosophy that children tend to acquire skills in relatively predictable fashions although of course there are variations in the sequence of development from one child to another. We recognize that the early years are optimal periods for certain types of development such as sociability language acquisition and literacy. The teachers in our school provide opportunities materials and learning experiences with varying degrees of difficulty. They adapt the curriculum to individual needs strengths and the learning styles of each of the children all of whom are encouraged to pursue their own interests and to work at their own pace.
It is also part of our theories of child development that the classroom environment must support creativity curiosity and self-expression. Children must be encouraged to be active rather than passive learners and given opportunities to question experiment and draw conclusions.
Also pervasive to the Highway Nursery School’s philosophy is that children must be considered within the social and cultural contexts from which they come. Diversity is celebrated in our school and family involvement is recognized as critical to the maximal development of each child.
Above all the Highway Nursery School recognizes that children need to feel valued supported and safe in order to insure maximal progress. The teachers are committed to creating a community in which mutual respect unconditional acceptance and individualized learning are intrinsic to the day-to-day operation of each class and where the children feel they are integral members of a school family. In addition the Highway Nursery School recognizes that its program is for families not simply their children. Every effort is made to secure parent involvement and teacher-parent collaboration.
