When children enter school they begin to acquire and practice the skills associated with the development of industry and academic inquiry. During this period children focus on developing those skills necessary for success in school and in life. Emotionally they are eager to be independent of adults. Socially they are concerned about being accepted by their peers. As they grow they enjoy assisting younger children and exercising leadership skills. Cognitively they are challenged and enjoy working on projects following directions mastering sequential practice and participating in games with rules. Among the challenges they may face are difficulties accepting results [failure or the reality of being among a group of winners rather than being solely first] and the inability to express themselves verbally and in writing.
Our curriculum assists children in the development and mastery of those skills necessary for successful competition as well as with the solid psychological and emotional maturity required to aide in the expression of both positive and negative feelings surrounding competition success and failure. Our hands-on project centered instructional methods help to improve their co-ordination and strength to develop a predefined personality and to assume responsibility for self. It also helps to increase their attention span to speak clearly to enjoy the listening to and the telling or retelling of stories.
The challenge now facing us in early childhood education is to help all students develop the skills necessary to evaluate and analyze for success even at so early an age. Setting clear and consistently articulated high standards for all is one from among the many ways we meet this challenge. Standards must be written in clear explicit language that reflect the content of the subject area and detailed enough to provide guidance to teachers students and others who will be using them. Rubrics which guide performance as well as evaluation are standard tools utilized for student and teacher success.
