The motto of Wakefield Country Day School, Virtus et Sapientia, (virtue and wisdom), indicates our conviction that intellectual and moral development is inseparable in the educational process. The mission of Wakefield Country Day School is to develop each student’s character and intellect through active involvement in a structured curriculum founded on classical principles and in an environment that encourages scholarship, diligence, self-discipline, and respect for and service to others. WCDS cultivates an ethic of individual worth, responsibility, and service rooted in the Judeo-Christian tradition, in order to prepare students for the moral and intellectual rigors of citizenship in a free society.

At Wakefield Country Day School, We believe that school should be a place for serious intellectual inquiry dedicated to the pursuit of truth, that students achieve the most when they are challenged to excel and held to the highest academic standards. While the ultimate aim of education is individual freedom, to become truly liberated, students must first acquire the precision and self-discipline upon which learning depends. Students perform best in a disciplined, orderly environment that is adjusted to the developing needs of each child and in an atmosphere that fosters a familial sense of community, mutual respect, and responsibility. Essential to such a school are teachers who set a tone of serious intellectual inquiry, who serve as models of responsible citizenship and moral probity, who bring to the classroom enthusiasm for learning and expertise in their subjects, and who view teaching as a vocation.

At WCDS, students must master a basic core of knowledge that will enable them, as graduates, to interpret and make critical decisions about the world they will face as adults. The content-based curriculum inculcates a love and understanding of the achievements and moral underpinnings of Western culture. Once students have gained this appreciation of their civilization and their nation, their personal development can proceed on a firm foundation and with confidence.
