Preschool in Haddonfield, NJ 08033
The Beechwood School is a family owned, independent, state licensed preschool and kindergarten. It opened in 1951 at its present site by the Rodman family. It was one of the first nursery schools and summer camps in the area.
In May 1979, the Hutchinson family took over. While continuing the tradition of providing a quality preschool and kindergarten program, they added child care. Today, two of the Hutchinson sisters, Marge McElroy and Susan Hagan, along with the help of their mother Marge Hutchinson, continue providing quality preschool and kindergarten programs for both the half-day and full-day student.
The school has grown from thirty children in September 1979 to a daily enrollment of approximately one hundred children. Presently the aim is to maintain the current registration level without increasing it further. By doing this, a family atmosphere can be provided and each child can be known personally by the administration.
Enrollment is open to any toilet-trained child, age two and a half (2) years by September, through six (6) years by June, provided the school can meet the child’s needs. Children may be enrolled two to five days a week for either half or full days. This allows families to choose the hours that best meet their needs.

The Beechwood School believes that children develop at their own pace, naturally and sequentially if given time and stimulation. The needs of the children at each developmental level are important. These needs are met by providing age appropriate activities and environments that include social, emotional, intellectual, creative, and physical aspects of learning. Children, when ready, will be able to internalize information and concepts which lead to mastering a skill.
Children are taught in self contained classrooms with appropriate student-teacher ratios. The curriculum and environment, which are prepared by the staff, are conducive to learning and adapted to the developmental levels of the students. Children are able to experience both individual and group activities. The staff supervises and records the development of social, intellectual and physical competencies of each student.
