Committee for Early Childhood Development Head Start is a federally funded program serving children between the ages of 3-5 years mostly from economically disadvantaged families. CECD Head Start is a non-profit organization. We are a family oriented program that provides opportunities for children and parents to excel. Children are serviced in a safe secure clean and nurturing environment and parent involvement is an integral part of our program. Per Federal Mandate 10% of the children serviced in our program have special needs. We have a strong Male Involvement Program and a Womens Empowerment Group and they meet once a month. The program also participates in the NYC Department for the Aging Foster Grandparent Program. These grandparents work one-on-one in the classroom with children with special needs. The strength of our program is based on strong parent participation qualified and caring staff and a very active and highly supportive Governing Board. CECD received the New York State Department of Education Outstanding Pre- Kindergarten Award in January 2005. Our Jamaica Avenue site is a National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) Accredited site.

Committee for Early Childhood Development Head Start utilizes a complete child development program. We target the childs whole learning environment including health nutrition literacy cognitive social emotional and physical development.

We believe that parents are a childs first teacher since they have the greatest influence on and responsibility for their child. Regular home visits and parent conferences help us provide continual opportunities for parents to develop competence in parenting and child development and help increase parents self-respect and confidence in the process.

The curriculum model at CECD is High /Scope. The main point of this curriculum is the belief that all children regardless of age or ability are able to make decisions and solve problems. Active learning is a key ingredient in this philosophy. Children learn better when they initiate the learning rather than being traditionally instructed by the teacher. The classroom environment is success oriented. Children learn through repetition new experiences and self-individualized activities. Each child learns at a different rate and in different ways.

Our programs success is built upon an atmosphere of teamwork cooperation and communication. Equally important is the trust respect and confidence our team has for each other regardless of cultural and/or ethnic background.

We at Committee for Early Childhood Development Head Start are committed to the philosophy that all children can learn. Therefore all preschool children between the ages of three and five years old living in this community deserve a comprehensive program of activities designed to stimulate and foster a readiness for learning.
