Mar Vista Montessori & Infant Care Center was founded by Evelyn Sowa. After 2 years from start to finish (conditional use permit, construction permits and construction) the school opened its doors to the community in July 2006. It was a very exciting first day of school and has been wonderful since then. Over the last two and a half years the school has grown and now includes three different classrooms and 15 teachers providing Preschool enrichment and childcare for over 100 families. Maria Montessori, the first Italian female physician, became interested in educating children after conducting research in psychiatric medicine. Montessori studied the works of Edouard Sequin (1812 – 1898) and Jean Itard (1775-1883) – two doctors that helped create educational materials for challenged children. As a result, she developed educational materials of her own. Children teach themselves. This simple but profound truth inspired Montessoris lifelong pursuit of educational reform, methodology, psychology, teaching, and teacher training – all based on her dedication to furthering the self-creating process of the child. Montessori said We have clearly shown that a child has a need to observe, to reflect, to learn, to concentrate, to isolate himself, and also from time to time, to suspend his activities in silence. The education of a small child does not aim to prepare him for school but for life. The Montessori classroom allows young students to be creative, independent, social and motivated to engage in academic activities. The materials are designed to teach children using their auditory, visual, tactile senses as well as manipulative skills.
