German/English Tutor

I am a native New Yorker and moved to the Swiss-German border as a young child, where I completed a German Abitur. Upon moving back to the US, I received a B.A. in German Literature and Urban Economics from Brandeis University. I have maintained native fluency in German and English. My work experience spans translation, tutoring, interpretation, editing, and business writing….

Norman R. from Jersey City, NJ Marlene was a pleasure to work with, always helping me even when I got discouraged. On her own time she prepared helpful written aids for me, and always had interesting things to discuss which will help when I am in Europe, actually having to speak a foreign language. I had a good time with the lessons I had and I am only sorry I could not stay the course.

Jonathan B. from Brooklyn, NY Marlene met my brother and I for the first time this morning and gave us a two-hour lesson. We practiced speaking, with many stops along the way to consider the "nuances" of German grammar, vocabulary, colloquial usage, and pronunciation. Throughout, Marlene was helpful and led the study in a lively but not overbearing way. While I have studied before with someone who was more experienced as a German language instructor per se, Marlene was clearly an experienced and thoughtful speaker and teacher of the language. In fact, she turned out to be widely knowledgeable about languages: fluent in English, German, Yiddish, French (and in the study of Latin). She learned German after moving to Germany from the US at the age of seven (through high school, and she said that this made her more aware of the process of learning the language than might have been the case if she had been born and raised in Germany. I've always put an emphasis in my study on getting the correct pronunciation, and I felt very comfortable with her; to my ear, she spoke clearly and naturally.
