Hello, my name is Jan Mengel. I am a retired teacher with an 4-year degree in Elementary/Special Education, and a Masters degree in Special Education from the University of Pittsburgh.

Three years ago I moved from Williamsport, PA to the North Hills of Pittsburgh to help care for my 4 young grandsons, who were newborn,, 3, 7, and 9 years old at that time. Since the 3 oldest are now in school, I have more time on my hands, and I miss teaching!

The majority of my professional experience has been with preschool to young adults with special needs; however, I have volunteered at my church as a teacher and choir director for kids without any identified special needs. A highlight of this volunteer work was including an elementary aged boy living with cerebral palsy, and a preschool/elementary aged boy living with autism into our classroom and choir with their similar aged typical peers. It was very rewarding to see their peers learn about their specialized communication devices that allowed them to sing and learn along with their friends!

Also, a huge passion of mine is my Diapers Away program, which has assisted over 50 children, with and without special needs, in saying goodbye to diapers!
