Write a messageGrowing up the oldest child in a large family comes with many perks. One being – I am always in charge of the littles ones. While this authority and freedom was fun – the responsibility was stressful for younger- me. However; as a headstrong kid, I was always up for a challenge. Around the age of 14, my aunts and uncles started having kids of their own. Which was amazing for me because then I could finally have a friend besides my younger brother to hang out with! From then on, I was the go-to babysitter and tutor of the family. In a family of immigrants that primarily speak Spanish – I was the one who could help the little ones with school work and act as a role model for them as they all hoped that I would be the first to graduate from college. First it was just the responsibility of watching the younger ones at family gatherings. This then led to random during the week – and eventually a regular schedule. I actually really loved the long races and the mental battles that came with 20 minute races. When I wasn’t training with the team, I was finding comfort with the new and younger swimmers that were eager to start competing. As time went on, I became a mentor for the young swimmers and was voted team captain and most helpful. I loved being a reliable figure for the swimmers and helping out in anyway I could. One swimmer I grew close to was Nick. He was such bubbly kid with so much energy and compassion. His mom asked me to tutor him on the weekends of my junior and senior years of high school. With Nick and I growing closer, I started to become inspired. As Nick was special needs, I decided that I wanted to work in the health care system. Specifically as a pediatric nurse practitioner. After gaining my associates in social and behavioral sciences at PCC, I transferred to NYU wher
