I first became interested in working with children when I was a camp counselor for children ages ranging from 3-13 through the CuicaCalli summer camp, which is based in San Francisco, CA. It was a camp based on helping children learn through music and cultural activities. I assisted children with their arts/crafts and helped them learn new dances. I was the head counselor and oversaw groups, supervised camp, and ensured all children and counselors’ safety and fun.
My current work experience with children was being a short-term nanny for a family in NY during COVID-19. A friend of my family asked for my assistance due to being an essential worker. I was a nanny for their 8-month-old son and their 3-year-old son. This included assisting the 8-month-old with crawling (proper positioning), assisted standing, feeding soft/solid foods, diaper changes, and reading while playing with sensory activities. I assisted the 3-year-old boy with potty training (we were successful aside from pooping; still likes the diaper!), reading, coloring, play dough, singing ABCs, numbers, and following the Montessori program. I am not certified; however, that is what he was doing in school, so I decided to try and take over and follow that curriculum.
While in NY on my off days, I would watch another set of children and assist their mother, who was on maternity leave. This would include feeding a 3-week-old, burping, diaper, and dressing changes. I would assist their 2-year-old with all the above tasks and, of course, outside supervision while swimming and playing.
I can bring children to the park/outings while maintaining social distancing, even if it is for a short walk. I am a licensed driver who has their own vehicle. I helped children learn the stranger danger line and have them hold hands when someone new is near. I believe it is important to be outside and let them be children.
I am in the process of registering to become CPR, and First Aid certified and would be willing to complete a background check.
I thoroughly enjoy working with children of all age ranges and understand the amount of work that is required to do so.
I am returning to San Francisco as both families no longer need childcare due to their state opening up more. I will be attending CSU Dominguez Hills next month (August), where I study political science with a double major in marketing. I was selected to become an RA (Resident Assistant) for my school’s housing unit and will be based in Los Angeles.
