Over the past six years, my work in childcare has been centered around a program specifically tailored for children with autism. Through this incredible opportunity, I’ve gotten to work one-on-one with kids as well as leading and coordinating small group programs. My experience spans from helping to provide targeted speech therapy to 4-year-olds to leading classes on life skills for 18-year-olds, giving me a comprehensive understanding of diverse age groups. During the summer months, I devoted my time to two camps under this program, one based in the forest with little structure and one in a classroom environment. As a group leader at the forest camp, I facilitated engaging games, led nature hikes, and crafted valuable social lessons. Meanwhile, at the classroom-style camp, I mastered the art of structuring captivating days filled with science and art activities tailored for various age groups. Beyond these impactful programs, I formed meaningful connections with wonderful families, particularly those with children on the autism spectrum. Transitioning into the role of a trusted babysitter, I gained an understanding of the unique needs of children with autism, in their homes.
