Garrison Afterschool Program is a ministry of The Episcopal Church of our Saviour in Virginia-Highland. The program has no religious content, but we do encourage children to be respectful of each other and tolerant of differences. We strive to achieve a diverse enrollment to provide the best opportunity for all of our students to learn cooperation and teamwork.
GAP provides an excellent balance of structured and unstructured activities. Every child is scheduled a session in the sensory room with their peers. This is a room filled with foam filled duvet covers and pillows. There is a slide and jumping platform, we also have a swing and climbing net that are available. This room serves as a decompression chamber – for some this is jumping, for others it is a pillow fight, others will engage in imaginary play. The physical nature of the room allows the child to integrate back into their body after a long day at school – this is calming and organizing for the child.
Elementary School Preschool children practice conversation skills and table manners at snack, then go to the playground for some fun. Next theres homework. We have enough qualified staff to help children who have questions about their assignments, or to give a spelling test or review a reading log. We also ask children to read independently during homework time.
