Thematic Integrated Curriculum

A thematic integrated curriculum is at the heart of The Atlanta Schools program. The disciplines of language, math, music, physical education, the arts, social studies and sciences are explored through the experiential study of one topic over an extended period of time. For example, when first and second graders study river ecology, they learn map skills, read books and poems about rivers, take weekly field trips to area rivers, study related earth science topics and make a river ecosystem display with papier-mache models of the plants and animals they have studied. This unit may end with a canoe and tent camping trip along a river that the students help plan.
Out in the World

One of the most precious, if intangible, resources of The Atlanta School is mobility. Our small size enables us to go on numerous field trips and other off-campus excursions. The frequency with which we take these trips allows us to make them integral elements of our curriculum rather than just entertaining diversions. Travel makes our students more adventurous and teaches them how to conduct themselves in a variety of settings.

In addition to extending the students academic experiences, many of these trips, which often involve hiking, canoeing, bicycling, rafting and swimming, are an important part of our physical education program.
