The Children's School

Center in Atlanta, GA 30309

Whats in a name? Well to us, a lot. When The Childrens School was founded 41 years ago, Lila Bost McDill and her team of dedicated parents and teachers chose a name that would clearly and simply communicate the schools number one priority its children. For nearly half a century, TCS has remained committed to the education, development, and growth of each and every one of its students. at TCS, even our youngest students are treated with respect, dignity, and high expectations.

The academic strength of The Childrens School is evidenced through the success of its graduates. On average, 98 to 100 percent of TCS sixth graders are accepted into their first-choice middle school and go on to lead impressive academic careers at the high school and college level. TCS curriculum has greater depth and less superficial coverage, leading to greater understanding and retention, and supporting the development of problem-solving and critical thinking skills. Similarly, the curriculum is personally relevant to students, while at the same time other perspectives, including the structure of other disciplines, and the use of cognitive processes to solve problems, are included as well.

The reason our students are so successful is undoubtedly because of the talent and dedication of our faculty. TCS teachers commitment, patience, and creativity never cease to amaze me. Sometimes its an innovative way to bring a struggling student to that a-ha moment; others, a lesson that is so exciting and fun that students forget that theyre learning. Teachers at The Childrens School genuinely love what they do and that joy shines through every student-teacher interaction.

What is equally as compelling as our academic program, is our purposefully and authentically diverse community. TCS students, faculty, staff and families are a representative sample of the world in which we live. Diversity and inclusion were at the heart of Lila Bost McDills vision back in 1970 and remains so today. Differences are embraced and individuality is celebrated which results in caring, compassionate global citizens.

For more than 40 years, The Childrens School has been enriching minds and inspiring dreams. Please enjoy exploring the pages of The Childrens School website.

At The Childrens School we stress strong interrelationships among students, faculty, parents and the community. All people involved in The Childrens School have the right and responsibility to share their ideas, their knowledge, and their feelings with each other. The school provides an environment that encourages open communication.

Children learn by active involvement in diverse media and by direct personal experiences. The school provides experiences that accommodate a variety of individual learning styles. As new concepts or skills are introduced, we believe that tasks should be presented on a continuum moving from concrete example to abstract understanding; from carefully considered action to automatic integration of codes of behavior. We believe that motivation for learning comes from within the child and is stimulated and cultivated by teacher and parent reinforcement, guidance and example.

We strive to prepare children so that they will be able to manage their lives satisfactorily in this complex world. While offering them the security of the familiar educational community, the school regularly leads the children to test their skills, concepts and beliefs in larger settings. From these experiences they come to value and learn from the widest variety of lifestyles and beliefs and attain the proficiency and confidence to act effectively as responsible citizens in our world community. We embrace a multicultural approach to learning.

Children are whole beings, and it is known that learning tasks and experiences, by their nature, often fragment the whole being. It is our belief that each task must lead back to the whole and that each child should always be aware of the relationship between part and whole. The Childrens School strives for the development of the whole person.
