East Side House Mitchel Community Center

East Side House has expanded the educational opportunities available to children and their parents by providing students with the opportunity to attend a combined academic and recreational summer day camp. Enrolled students are provided with more learning time in an environment that is predicated on high expectations caring supportive relationships and opportunities to expand students mind. The program targets students in grades 4 – 8 and focuses on providing a positive social and academic experience at a critical developmental stage. We strive to help students see the connections between academic disciplines as they move into departmentalized instruction and to support the Board of Educations literacy initiative. Like the best classrooms this camp engages the childs mind body and spirit by holding high expectations for all learners providing a strong caring community of adults and children and offering a variety of instructional strategies and a rich learning environment. The camp provides a critical opportunity for children to build their self-confidence become problem-solvers learn self-discipline and gain a sense of personal responsibility and community responsibility and develop teamwork skills. Ultimately the additional learning time can help increase the number of students who reach our academic benchmarks and pass on to the next grade level equipped with strong skills.
