Our goal is to guide children as they learn to make positive choices about their behavior. At the YMCA, the focus is on preventive discipline that may include setting clear behavior expectations, informing children of consequences, follow through, consistency, redirection and the use of humor. Children are encouraged to talk through their problems when conflict arise and to make choices to correct inappropriate behavior, with the teachers acting as mediators rather than problem solvers. It is the goal of the discipline philosophy to allow children to “own their behavior” and learn to make good choices.
