Center in Greenbelt, MD 20770
“In 1963, Community Builders Incorporated began to construct Springhill Lake Apartment Complex, described as the largest garden apartment complex on the east coast by Jim Giese, Greenbelt city manager. The developers studied Greenbelt’s design and largely replicated it in their 3,000 unit plan. Apartments with ample green space surrounded a central shopping area. A swimming pool and system of internal walkways were included.” Greenbelt, Maryland: A Living Legacy of the New Deal by Cathy D. Knepper.
Springhill Lake Elementary School, named for the development surrounding it, was opened in January 1966 with 12 classrooms. Three additions were added in 1970, 1974, and 1998 bringing the current number of classrooms within the building to 36.
There have been four principals from 1966 to the present. The current principal, Natasha Jenkins, was appointed in 2009.
