The Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church Day School is an integral part of the Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church. The Day School was founded in 1949 as an extension of the Church’s educational mission and community outreach. It continues to serve families within and beyond the congregation; providing a developmentally appropriate nursery-kindergarten program. The curriculum is intentionally non-religious but is designed to enhance children’s spiritual intellectual social emotional and physical development. The Day School seeks to provide its educational opportunities to an ethnically economically and religiously diverse community.

The Day School is an educational environment which respects and nurtures the different gifts and learning styles each child brings to the group. The children’s interests are an integral part of curriculum planning. We support an inquiry process leading toward focused studies of topics which are particularly engaging to the children and provide the opportunity for integrated emergent curriculum. This project approach embraces the arts as languages which enable expression of ideas theories understanding and questions. It affords teachers insight into each childs needs and interests.

The Day Schools approach to early childhood education is rooted in constructivist-progressive pedagogy. Every aspect of our school curriculum teaching style physical environment and practice is centered on our image of the child; a term adopted from our Italian colleagues in Reggio Emilia. It is not a new way of thinking for us but a very clear statement of our organizing principle:

We believe children are inherently competent; that they are born with all the potential capabilities they need in life to learn to aspire to love to succeed as human beings. We also believe that childrens intellect is expressed not just verbally but in many non-verbal ways including music art and materials construction and through manipulation of elemental sensory materials such as sand water and earth.

Through observing and studying children while they are engaged with materials we see that they are creating concrete representations of their theories ideas and understanding of how things work in the world. Individualized attention is the key to supporting each childs natural unfolding revealing who they are meant to be.
