An urban school, Tanners Creek Elementary is one of the newest elementary schools in the city of Norfolk. The school was built in 1990 to relieve overcrowding in the eastern portion of the city. Tanners Creek has forty classrooms and serves grades pre-kindergarten through fifth. The school has three self-contained learning disabilities classes and two self-contained emotionally disturbed classes. In its 14 years of operation, the school has had three principals. The current principal, Kathleen Mein, was appointed during the 2003-2004 school year. The school mascot is the koala and the school’s colors are teal and yellow. The school is currently serving 650 students with a 1:20 teacher/student ratio. There are forty-seven personnel on the instructional staff, forty-nine on the support staff, and two administrators. There are fifteen bus drivers and one crossing guard.
The theme of Tanners Creek Elementary is the Three R’s- Respect, Responsibility, and Reliability.
