One of the things that sets The Women’s Treatment Center apart from other treatment centers is our comprehensive children’s programs.
Pediatric Nurse
The Pediatric Nurse is a key member of TWTC’s comprehensive children’s services team, responsible for coordinating the medical care of nearly 200 children annually in residence or attending Daycare and Pre-Kindergarten classes. The Nurse strives to ensure that all children at TWTC are healthy and have access to necessary medical and dental services and immunizations. She also monitors the health and well-being of children in the full-day Daycare, Inpatient units, Residential Transitional Living Program, and the Crisis Nursery.
Through group sessions and one-on-one meetings, the Pediatric Nurse equips mothers with the knowledge and tools they need to adequately care for their children and to advocate for them within healthcare and social service settings. Since the launch of the Program in 2007, mothers in treatment have demonstrated better understanding and confidence in managing their child’s healthcare needs, resulting in a dramatic decrease in unscheduled visits to the Emergency Room. In Fiscal Year 2006 (FY06), before the Pediatric Nurse Program began, children in residence at TWTC were taken to the Emergency Room 115 times. In FY10, the number dropped to 46 – a significant savings to the larger community and public.
The Pediatric Nurse Program at TWTC is funded entirely through contributions from individuals and foundations. We would like to thank the Lloyd A. Fry Foundation, the Chicago Blackhawks Community Fund (a fund of the McCormick Foundation), the Grant HealthCare Foundation, and the Polk Brothers Foundation for their continued support of the Pediatric Nurse program.
Crisis Nursery
TWTC is the only substance abuse treatment center in Illinois with a Crisis Nursery that provides services for a child 24 hours a day when a mother in treatment is unable to care for her child. Thanks to this program, mothers in need of substance abuse treatment can enter treatment at TWTC, knowing that there is a safe place for their children. Thanks to this program, mothers in treatment at TWTC can stay in treatment when they are physically or emotionally unable to care for their children, knowing their children will be fed and bathed and cared for when they cannot. Because of this program, families stay together in the most difficult of times, strengthening their bonds and building a foundation for a lifetime of recovery.
Infant-Toddler Development Daycare
The Women’s Treatment Center’s Infant / Toddler Daycare program is an integral part of our program configuration designed to prevent child abuse and neglect. The daycare program serves as a powerful inducement for women to enter treatment for their substance abuse, and provides quality care for their children and the resulting peace of mind they need to continue in treatment. Beyond providing children a safe place to stay while their mothers get treatment, our Infant / Toddler Daycare provides educational, developmental and medical screenings and referrals, and age-appropriate curricula. In conjunction with Daycare, our Parenting education and intervention program identifies and improves mothers’ attitudes about parenting, and reduces behaviors related to child abuse and neglect.
Pre-Kindergarten Program
This program is a joint venture with the Chicago Public Schools and Illinois State Pre-Kindergarten Programs to provide a special Pre-Kindergarten classroom for 16 three- and four-year-olds who live with mothers in treatment at TWTC.
