Mary Tsukamoto Child Development Center

Mary Tsukamoto Elementary School is among the newestof the elementary schools in the rapidly growing Elk Grove Unified School District.Opened in August of 1992 with 600 students in grades K-6 the campus has grownsince that time into a 4 track year-round site serving 1050 students. Mrs.Mary Tsukamoto played a role in establishing and eNHAncing the culture andtraditions of the school community. The stories shared by Mrs. Tsukamoto abouther years in the internment camps of World War II were profound lessonsthat provided a powerful basis upon which to build the multi-culturalappreciation that is evident in our school. The school’s dedication ceremony in March of 1993 brought together civicleaders the neighboring community school staff members and students incelebration of the naming of the school after Mrs. Tsukamoto. CongressmanRobert Matsui presented the school with a commemorative flag that had flownover the U.S. Capitol. The Tsukamoto family presented the school with a wall-sizedceramic mural portraying scenes from Mrs. Tsukamoto’s rich Japanese culture. Atime capsule was prepared by the students to commemorate the day.
