West Whittier

There are many commitments the staff at West Whittier has made to its students that have been proven to work for its
population and which have assisted in their tremendous academic gains. We will build on these commitments to
pursue new goals and take our students to a higher level.
The teachers have received training in language arts, math, English Language Development, differentiated
instruction, GATE and Thinking Maps. As a result of our ongoing staff development and training, our teachers are
equipped with a variety of strategies to help provide differentiated instruction for our students and meet their individual
needs. As a result of this individualized instruction, our students academic scores have improved yearly.
Currently there are 440 students enrollEducation There are 3 full day kindergarten classrooms, 3 first grade classrooms, 3
second grade classrooms, 2 third grade classrooms, one 3/4 combination classroom, 2 fourth grade classrooms, 2
fifth grade classrooms, one 4/5 combination classroom and two Special Day classrooms. Teachers have ongoing
collaboration to plan our lessons in grade level teams. We constantly review our students’ assessments so that we
can provide timely interventions. Our Special Day Classrooms are included in all activities and the students are
mainstreamed into the regular education classrooms to provide many opportunities for them.
