Preschool in Alachua, FL 32615
The Spencer House Montessori school was founded in 1999 with the goal of providing a truly substantive curriculum in the loving environment of a family owned and operated school. To compliment the unique atmosphere of the historic school building the Montessori teaching method pioneered by Dr. Maria Montessori was chosen to base the curriculum on. Montessori emphasizes learning through exploration and experience as opposed to teacher-centered drills and exercises.
The Montessori classroom is designed to introduce the child to the joy of learning at an early age and provides the framework for individual and social discipline. The years between three and six are the prime time for laying an academic foundation and more importantly the years when a child learns the ground rules of human behavior most easily. At The Spencer House Montessori we believe that it is up to each of us whether we are parents or friends of parents to reach out and encourage children as they grow and learn.
On a daily basis each student at The Spencer House Montessori School will be working on life skills such as tying their shoes washing their hands cleaning up their work and being courteous to others. They will watch tadpoles grow into frogs and butterflies emerge from their cocoons. They will study countries in depth learning about the landscape the animal inhabitants the people and the culture. They will be introduced to reptiles mammals properties of water the seven continents the solar system music and much more! Their natural curiosity will be encouraged and their learning will be supported in a positive environment. Our goal is not just to teach them what they learn but teach them how to learn.

The foundation of the Montessori philosophy is respect…for your child for other children and adults and for the environment. Your child learns to be independent and to do things for himself. He chooses work that interests him takes care of his own needs helps others gets excited about learning and actively seeks to know more. The classroom rules provide a framework to allow freedom and the emergence of self-discipline in the children. The rules are few logical and consistently reinforced. Children of this age feel secure when they have “freedom within limits”. The children develop good work habits and a sense of responsibility. The classroom belongs to them and the teacher encourages them to keep it clean and orderly. They learn to concentrate and complete a sequence of steps. They return things to the shelf ready for the next person to use and take pride in their abilities and environment. The three-year age span lets children learn from one another and allows the older ones to develop a sense of responsibility as models to the younger ones. The older students feel very capable and gain a marvelous self-image of being the “big kids”.
The dress code for the Preprimary class is as follows: Children must wear clothing that is comfortable and easily managed by his or her self. (No sandals and no belts please). School uniforms are encouraged at this age but are not required.
