Y Journeys in Early Childhood Development focuses on the developmental and educational needs of the young child with an emphasis on school-readiness and fun! Using the Core Knowledge Preschool Sequence, Y staff teaches skills related to school-readiness as measured by the Maryland State Department of Education. Plus, the Ys character development values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility are infused into everything we do.

At the Y, each day is a journey of discovery and learning. How do plants grow? Who is George Washington? What is respect? How do I sort by color? How do things float? Who is Eric Carle? By using the Creative Curriculum (for children ages 6 weeks to 2 years) and the Core Knowl-edge Preschool Curriculum (for children ages 3 to 5 years), our teachers carefully plan activities to ensure that your child will develop the academic and social skills needed for kindergarten and beyond:
Language & Literacy – Reciting nursery rhymes, finger plays and songs. Increasing vocabulary. Reading stories and story-telling. Learning reading and writing skills.
Physical Well-being – Implementing movement, coordination, and fine and gross motor development through outdoor play and the I Am Moving, I Am Learning curriculum.
Social & Emotional Development – Learning social skills and work habits. Understanding rules and following directions.
Math – Discovering mathematical concepts, including patterning, sequencing, counting, grouping and sorting to
name a few.
Science – Making predictions and understanding the physical world around us.
Music – Identifying sounds and rhythms. Singing, dancing and playing instruments.
Visual Arts – Producing art using various media and techniques. Examining and appreciating artwork.
Character Development – Implementing the Y core values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.
All of this allows us to provide asset-rich programs that meet or exceed state standards and help young children build developmental assets- the building blocks that shape children into caring, responsible and successful members of society.
