The Montessori Day School of Brooklyn is a parent/teacher managed Section 501©(3) non-profit school licensed by the NYC Department of Health. Previously affiliated with the YWCA of Brooklyn the school was established as an independent organization in 2003 by parents and teachers.
The school is a culturally ethnically socio-economically diverse community working together to nurture children with a true sense of independence an abiding respect for self and others and a love of learning and exploration.
For more than 25 years MDS has provided Brooklyn families with a high-quality nonprofit preschool for children. MDS currently serves children 2 years to 6 years of age and offers several different scheduling options including extended days to help meet the varied needs of our families.
Our classrooms are stimulating hands-on environments with high teacher-to-student ratios. The MDS faculty includes creative well-trained teachers who are committed to fostering each child’s individual growth and development curiosity and readiness to learn.
Parents are an integral part of the MDS community and are actively engaged in the school. Through the collaborative efforts of the parents and teachers the school strives not only to be an excellent preschool but a supportive and welcoming community and a valued parenting resource.
MDS is professionally managed by its Director and administrative staff and is governed by a Board of Directors that is made up of current and alumnae parents. The Board works with the school administration to ensure that the school functions in the most efficient manner possible for the benefit of the school community.
MDS also has a strong PTA that is a vital part of its community. Despite their busy schedules parents and teachers are actively engaged in the school contributing their enthusiasm energy ideas and skills in many ways.
As one of the few preschools in Brooklyn to offer both toddler and extended day preschool options MDS families hail from all over the borough including Boerum Hill Prospect Heights Bedford-Stuyvesant Park Slope Clinton Hill Fort Greene and more. Our families and staff come from many countries and speak many languages in addition to English. Children who complete our program – many of them reading and tackling math several grade levels above average – succeed at top public and private schools including Packer Saint Ann’s Brooklyn Friends the Little Red Schoolhouse (Manhattan) The Children’s School The Brooklyn New School P.S. 261 P.S. 321 and many others.
