Preschool in Chesapeake, VA 23323
The School Chesapeake Montessori Pre-School was established in 1991. It is located in the heart of Great Bridge near Chesapeake City Hall. The school operated as a one-room Childrens House (ages 3- 6 years) for 11 years. In 2002 it was purchased by Shanna and Joe Honan. After teaching and directing the school for one year, in 2003, Shanna added a second Childrens House classroom. In 2006, Shanna and Joe decided to change the name of the school to Chesapeake Montessori School (CMS) in order to better identify the schools new direction. CMS currently has two campuses, educating approximately 180 children. Our Great Bridge campus has an infant/toddler room and two Childrens House classes (ages 3-6 years.) Our Grassfield campus has two Childrens House classes (3-6 years), two Lower Elementary classes (6-9 years) and one Upper Elementary (9-12 years).

The ultimate goal of Montessori education is to help children become self-motivated, independent and life-long learners. In order to do this Dr. Montessori developed some cornerstones for the Montessori environment: concrete materials (the work), multi-age classrooms, freedom with responsibility, recognition of sensitive periods for absorbing knowledge, recognition of the childs absorbent mind, individual lessons or presentations, the prepared environment, and the role of the teacher as facilitator, preparer of the environment and observer.
Dr. Montessori would say, The greatest sign of success for a teacher is to be able to say, The children are now working as if I did not exist.
