The mission of Ravenswood Community Child Care Center is to provide a warm, nurturing and safe environment for the children and families enrolled here. Specifically, the early childhood staff seeks:
to teach children to respect themselves, others and their environment
to provide a safe, nurturing and developmentally appropriate environment
to provide for all areas of a child’s development
to further the mission of the church with regard to teen parents and their efforts at completing high school
to develop creativity and critical thinking skills in children
to provide for children’s social and emotional development
to provide opportunities for staff to grow through professional development
to extend ourselves outside of the educational realm and into the community to collaborate with families
to provide resources for parents as needed as well as child development information
to enable administration to act as a support system for parents and staff
During a child’s enrollment, there are goals that teachers and parents set together to meet individual needs. Additionally, there are universal goals that all children will meet before leaving the center. Those goals include social/emotional, physical and cognitive skills appropriate to the child’s developmental stage which teachers have focused on through observations and lesson planning. Children will have a strong basis for future school success based upon healthy relationships with child care staff. Families will have learned the importance of social/emotional development and will have come away with ways to facilitate that through their participation in the classroom, at conferences with teachers, and through Friends and Family monthly meetings.
Through a growing sense of community within the child care center, families will leave with an increased support network of other families, as well as knowledge about ways in which children learn, what can be expected at various developmental stages of growth, and how to navigate the Chicago Public School system for the benefit of their child.

All classrooms utilize the Creative Curriculum. The resultant lesson planning is based on the interests and developmental needs of children in each class, as observed by their teacher. The Creative Curriculum allows staff to incorporate developmental milestones that are important to each child’s development with areas that excite your child. All roomswith the exception of the Red Roomhave well developed and inviting “Interest Areas.” These include large motor, small motor, science, water table, literacy, dramatic play/housekeeping, blocks and manipulatives. In the Blue Room, there will also be the addition of a work bench with working tools as the year progresses and the children mature. The philosophy of the child care center is:
to meet each child’s developmental needs through the use of a proven curriculum
to encourage attachment relationships to form to primary caregivers
to facilitate social-emotional learning through formal and informal means
to provide experiences that will enrich their lives and expand their horizons
to provide experiences that reflect and respect the family’s culture
to communicate frequently with parents and family members and to forge a positive child/teacher relationship
to model problem solving and conflict resolution for children and to encourage them to use these skills in interactions with others
You will receive weekly copies of lesson plans in your child’s cubby. You are welcome to visit the child care center at any time during the day and to participate with your child in scheduled field trips or other classroom activities. For the older children, these field trips may include such things as involvement in the Old Town School of Folk Music, the Chicago Children’s Museum, and other age appropriate venues as they become available. All children benefit from exposure to the world at large, as long as the exposure and experience are in line with their developmental ability to engage in an activity. For younger children, this might mean a walk to the Fire Station or to the mailbox to mail their teacher a letter. For infants, a buggy ride around the neighborhood provides much opportunity for language development as their teacher speaks to them about the things that they see as they go.
