At The Mountain School we know, and the research supports, that a genuine pleasure in learning is developed through play. We also know (and the research also supports) that lots and lots of imaginative play during the early years pays off in terms of increased academic achievement later on. We realize that preschoolers are not just smaller versions of bigger people, they’re children—very young children in an essential and crucial stage of development that cannot be hurried, and where the replacement of deep, engrossing play with direct instruction can limit learning, creativity, problem solving, and openness to new ideas.

Rather than facts and figures, we provide a foundation for learning, in the form of:

  • a longer attention span as children actively engage in the process of creating images through play and storytelling;
  • a fuller understanding of abstract concepts as they interact with the natural world, rather than learn by rote;
  • a love of learning because the knowledge gained from imagining and doing is stimulating and exciting;
  • self-esteem and emotional maturity, preparing them to form healthy relationships throughout life;
  • a capacity for creative thinking, the root of all true learning and problem-solving.

Children leave The Mountain School grounded in their beings, full of courage and creativity, and equipped with a powerful belief that they can do for themselves.
