PRESCHOOL – SCHOOL AGE –
Research and experience tell us that children learn best by doing. Have you ever heard the phrase play is a childs work? Most of us think this is a nice idea and then privately think But the childs just playing. What is the child learning? Play provides the foundation for academic or school learning. In a good early-childhood preschool program children have the opportunity to engage in many types of play experiences. They dress-up in the dramatic play area they build roads and towns with blocks and they create in the art area. But you still wonder How will this help my child to learn to read and do math?
When children put blocks in a truck and dump them they are learning about size weight and number concepts (math and science). A child who is pretending that a block is a sandwich is developing the thought process necessary to understand written language and reading (symbolic thought). Play provides the appropriate climate for pre-skill learning. Play is inherently interesting and children will engage in it for many hours. Through play children meet developmental challenges as well as develop the attitude that learning is a meaningful activity.
