Holly Brook Montessori School is a private, non-sectarian, co-educational school for children three to six years old. It was co-founded by Scott and Elizabeth Smith in September 1999. Mr. and Mrs. Smith received their teaching certificates from the Institute for Advanced Montessori Studies in Silver Spring, Maryland. Our current director, Leanne Shroeder was also trained at the Institute for Advanced Montessori Studies.

Elizabeth Smiths mother and father, Joyce and Lance Gilbert, cofounded the Montessori School of Cedar Lane in 1971, and Hunter Mill Montessori School in 1990. Holly Brook Montessori School follows in the same rich tradition that Cedar Lane and Hunter Mill have established in Northern Virginia.

At Montessori School of Cedar Lane, Holly Brook Montessori and Hunter Mill Montessori, learning is based on the principles of education discovered and promoted by Dr. Maria Montessori. Dr. Montessori was the first to discover and acknowledge the need for early education. Her discoveries have been verified by current educational research as well as over 100 years of successful implementation in schools around the world.

Dr. Montessori was the first educator to observe how effortlessly a child absorbs from his environment from birth to age seven. Children at this age are acutely sensitive to the world around them. Impressions formed during this time have a lasting effect upon the childs attitude toward learning and life itself. Dr. Montessori realized that it is necessary during this period for the child to find in his environment the tools to satisfy and stimulate his natural intellectual development.

Our three schools provide the prepared environment utilizing the discoveries and methods of Dr. Montessori to help the child develop more fully the potential within him. Each school provides a program especially suited to the needs of the child and offers additional individual attention to the whole development of the child.
