We are a nonprofit organization that opened for our summer program in June 2011 for children with hearing loss. After receiving a cochlear implant or hearing aid, children and families need the support, services and resources the preschool will provide to enable these children to hear, listen, learn, and speak as well as to prepare them to be mainstreamed into public or private school by kindergarten. We are committed to achieving excellence in oral as well as early childhood education for Colorados pre-school-aged children with hearing loss and their hearing peers.
Nationwide, there are many oral-deaf preschools that are changing the lives of children with hearing loss in profound and exciting ways. Denver is one of the only major metropolitan areas in the country that did not have a stand-alone program like the one envisioned by the Colorado Oral-Deaf PreSchool (CO ODPS) Board of Directors. The next closest program, more than 400 miles distant, is in Albuquerque, NM.
As a nonprofit 501©3 organization, our vision is to provide deaf children with an early, standards-based education that helps them master listening, speaking, and literacy skills. The clinical and educational model for the CO ODPS centers around developmentally-appropriate instruction, focused on preparing each child to enter mainstream education at an early age. Early intervention programs are offered for parents with infants as well as a toddler and preschool program. Children who wear hearing aids or cochlear implants are taught to listen and speak in an oral environment. They learn, play and interact with hearing children, who also will be in the program.
