The Pre-Kindergarten Program is based on a child development approach to learning. Each child is seen as a whole person. Activities are planned which encourage the child to progress developmentally in all areas: intellectual social emotional and physical. We believe that all children progress at their own rate and that we can facilitate that development by providing a healthy stimulating learning environment. We realize that children can vary in their levels and rate of development. Therefore in planning activities we constantly appraise each child’s needs and interests and do not compare children.

Included in our philosophy is the belief that young children learn best by exploring their environment and learn by doing. A substantial portion of the day is scheduled for child-selected activities in learning centers. We also recognize that children need the structure provided by adult-directed learning activities that are developmentally appropriate. Therefore a portion of the day also includes large and small group adult-directed activities designed to help the child understand concepts and extend language skills. Activities also increase attention span and provide experiences in group settings.

Another belief we hold is that for a child to function optimally he/she needs to be healthy. We therefore have a health education component in which we encourage children to eat nutritious foods and establish healthy habits in their lives.

We regard parents as the primary teachers of their child. Because they are so important in the lifetime learning experiences of their child their involvement in our program is of crucial importance. We encourage parents to participate in classroom activities help with program development and work with staff to plan activities for their child.
