The Forest Lake Montessori School was founded in 1973 as a non-profit organization. In November of 1975, the parents of enrolled children assumed responsibility for the schools operation. The school has been parent-owned and operated since that time, which means that parents actively participate in the activities of the school, including administration, hiring of teaching staff, maintenance of equipment and materials, planning open houses and conducting fund raisers.

The basic idea in the Montessori Philosophy of education is that all children carry within themselves the person they will become. In order to develop physical, intellectual, and spiritual potential to the fullest, the child must have freedom to achieve through order and self-discipline.
Dr. Maria Montessori developed what she called the Prepared Environment which already posesses a certain order and allows children to learn at their own speed, according to their own capacities, and in a non-competitive atmosphere. The years between 3-6 are the years in which children learn the rules of human behavior most easily. These years can be constructively devoted to civilizing children, freeing them through the acquisition of good manners and habits, to take their places in their culture.
