Montessori is a comprehensive educational philosophy based on the scientific and meticulous observation of children’s needs and abilities. Its aim is to cultivate and support the child’s natural desire to learn. It was developed by Dr. Maria Montessori 100 years ago. She developed this educational approach based on her studies of children’s natural learning tendencies as they unfold in specially prepared environments for multi-age groups (0-3 3-6 6-9 9-12 12-15 and up to 18). Dr. Montessori discovered that children pace their own development through a series of sensitive periods during which they become acutely aware of language order their own senses and society. Her method encourages these sensitive periods to explode into bursts of creativity introducing the child to the basics of Mathematics Language Care of the Environment and other disciplines.

The specially prepared environment contains specific materials for development that invite children to engage in learning activities of their own individual choice. Under the guidance of a trained teacher children in a Montessori classroom learn by making discoveries with these materials cultivating concentration motivation self-discipline and a love of learning. Every child learns individually and is encouraged to work at his or her own pace.
The main objective of the Montessori Method is to promote and stimulate the childs innermost potential. This is done not just by filling the brain with information as one might fill a jug with water but by guiding them in a way that allows a transformation into responsible individuals with a deep social and personal consciousness.

The community space is ample with clearly designated areas in which order and harmony invite the child to work with materials while allowing them freedom of movement.

Maria Montessori founded the Association Montessori Internationale (AMI) in 1929 which today maintains Montessori educational principles and disseminates Montessori education throughout the world. AMI USA supervises Montessori schools in the United States.
