In 1942, a community of parents and the Glencoe Board of Education worked together to establish Glencoe Junior Kindergarten and Nursery School (GJK), a preschool based upon good modern educational methods. Seventy years later, GJK continues this journey as a vibrant preschool that is nationally recognized for exceeding the standards for early childhood education.
GJK is an independent, non-profit preschool dedicated to the individual and unique development of each child. We recognize children are ready to interact within a secure setting beyond the home, and we provide a warm and nurturing environment that stimulates and encourages the child to explore, create, imagine, and learn.

At GJK we encourage each child to reach his or her potential in all areas of developmentluding cognitive, physical, social and emotional. Our program stresses the principle of learning through play. In our lively classrooms, your child will engage in activities that incorporate math, literacy, science, art, music, cooperation, and more! Play provides the opportunity for your child to express creativity, foster self esteem and develop individuality. Teachers, as facilitators, encourage each child to develop his or her own unique potential within an enriched setting.
GJK follows an emergent curriculum in which each classrooms activities grow from the ideas and interests of the children. We have become paleontologists, learned about Japanese culture, explored famous artists, designed and constructed new buildings, and taken train trips around the world. Each class brings new ideas and adventures!
