Early Childhood Education (ECE) is a field that is constantly growing and in need of professionals who can communicate with parents and students alike. Employment opportunities in the child and family service areas are expected to grow faster than the
national average.
The ECE class at the Career Center provides classroom teaching with actual experience working in an on-campus pre-school lab with children ages 2-5 years old. The program focuses on education for young children not simply care. The curriculum covers child growth and development health and nutritional needs positive guidance skills supervision safety entry level aide skills and how to plan prepare and implement daily activities. The class is geared for both college-bound students with an interest in education child psychology special needs or human services as well as those interested in childcare professions.
Students work directly with the children planning and teaching from lesson plans they write themselves. Field experiences include visits to area childcare centers post-secondary institutions and trips with children enrolled in the pre-school. Students must be able to pass CPR and First Aid certifications within the first two weeks of class.
Successful students are typically interested in a career in education or child-development. They are confident outgoing creative and good workers who enjoy working with children. Because students interact with children in the pre-school lab state law requires them to have a physical social security number TB test and criminal background check.
