Each day starts with Free Choice Time. The students have many options to choose from such as painting at the easel sand table train table and reading books. They can also choose from writing math and science tables on a rotating basis.
After a quick clean up its Circle Time. The teacher greets each child through song. The class practices math skills with weather and calendar activities. Students learn various songs and fingerplays over the year which go along with the theme at the time. The story for the day goes along with the theme as well. Some themes we use include apples and pumpkins fish shapes and dinosaurs to name just a few.
Students then break up into 3 small groups for more individualized attention. One group works on exploring different mediums of art such as water color painting clay sculpture and practicing cutting and gluing skills. Another works on strengthening their finger muscles through play in play dough or practice writing skills. A third group of students moves to the gym where they are able to explore on their own and develop gross motor skills through a climbing apparatus with slide balance beam balls cones and mats. We do go outside to the courtyard when the weather permits.
