Kalkaska C.A.R.E.S. (Children Acquiring Reading Essential Skills) Early Reading First launched its program in November of 2006. Our classrooms offer language and literacy activities based upon scientifically based reading research to ensure that our students enter kindergarten with the language cognitive and early reading skills necessary for continued success in school and life. The Program uses scientifically-based reading research to improve the classroom environment quality of instruction and curriculum and instruction. The program is offered in two rural communities in Northwest Michigan served by the Kalkaska Public Schools. The ERF program is impacting the education and services of eight preschool classrooms in Kalkaska Michigan as well as one preschool classroom in Rapid City Michigan.
Kalkaska C.A.R.E.S. is an Early Reading First program funded through a grant from the federal Department of Education. Our mission is to create early childhood centers of excellence in Kalkaska Michigan that focus on helping preschool students develop the four essential pre-reading skills: Oral Language Print Awareness Letter Knowledge Phonological Awareness
