The Bessie Pregerson Child Development Center supports the Westwood Transitional Village, a residential housing program for homeless families in and around Los Angeles County. The Childcare Center is one of the many support services available to residents of The Village.
The Bessie Pregerson Child Development Center is a state licensed, year round, full day Preschool program emphasizing state-of-the-art early childhood development practices and instruction. Special attention is paid to helping non-English speaking children to acquire new language skills. The Center provides day care facilities for 70 children aged 15 months to 5 years and is free for residents of The Westwood Transitional Village. The majority of the children in attendance come from residents of The Village, however, toddlers and Preschoolers from the local community may also enroll, provided space is available.
Many of the children at the Center have special needs, including developmental delays due to disintegration of the family unit, homelessness and abuse. In fact, the children often exhibit trauma from these conditions, which have led to deficiencies in education and emotional and behavioral problems. A qualified childcare staff provides an excellent curriculum designed to meet the individual, physical, social, emotional, cognitive and linguistic needs of each child while enhancing self-esteem, life skills and the ability to recapture the joys of play. The focus of the Center is to prepare the children for succesSFul entry into kindergarten and ongoing achievement in later school years.
