Hoeflin Stone House Child Care Center

The Hoeflin Stone House Early Childhood Education Center is located on the north side of campus on North Manhattan Avenue. The two-story facility features state-of-the-art technology and houses offices, a research suite, and six classrooms for children, ranging in age from six weeks through five years. Three architect-designed playgrounds, to meet the unique developmental needs of infants, toddlers, and preschoolers, are available on-site. The licensed center also is accredited by the National Academy of Early Childhood Programs of the National Association for the Education of Young Children. The facility serves as the clinical training site for students enrolled in the state approved and nationally accredited pre-service teacher education program in early childhood education. Both part-day and full-day programs are available for young children, including children with special needs.

Of the six classrooms, two comprise a part-day, part-year inclusive preschool program, The Early Childhood Lab, offered in collaboration with the local school district, USD 383. A total of 48 children (aged three to five years) may be enrolled in the Early Childhood Lab program. This program operates from August through May in 3 hour sessions, 8:30-11:30 a.m. or 12:30-3:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday. The lead teachers hold masters degrees and licensure in early childhood special education. Ancillary classroom staff include graduate and undergraduate students majoring in early childhood education or related programs. Preschool-aged children identified by the district with delays or disabilities are enrolled in the program and receive special services on-site. Typically developing peer models comprise two-thirds of the enrollment in each morning and afternoon session. As possible, the groups are balanced by sex and age of the children. Within these guidelines, children are accepted by date of application.

The four remaining classrooms follow a full-day, full-year schedule, serving infants, toddlers, and preschool-aged children. Eight children, from six weeks to two years of age, may participate in the infant program. Ten children, aged 24-36 months, may enroll in the toddler classroom. Two preschool classrooms each enroll 16 children, aged three-five years. The lead teachers are faculty and staff in the School of Family Studies and Human Services. Additional staff includes graduate and undergraduate students in early childhood education or related programs.

The center is available only for full-day enrollments, five days a week. The hours are 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and the center is open for most of the year, with the exception of University holidays and approximately one week in March, one week in August and two weeks at the end of December. Enrollment priority is given to children whose parents work full time. As possible, the groups are balanced by sex and age of the children. Within these guidelines, children are accepted by date of application.
