Preschool in Mc Lean, VA 22101
We welcome you to the Country Day School, an NAEYC accredited school dedicated to excellence in early childhood education. Founded by Dorothy B. McCormick over forty five years ago on four wooded acres in McLean, Virginia, the school has continually focused on offering a developmentally appropriate educational program for young children in a warm and caring environment.
At Country Day School, experienced early childhood educators who understand the developmental needs of preschoolers and kindergarteners engage the children daily in both small group and individual activities that take advantage of the many wonderful classrooms of the school, both indoors and out. The property includes two education buildings that contain classrooms, a nature room, an art studio, and a library, nine playgrounds that each offer different physical challenges for the children, nature and fitness trails, and an outdoor theater designed for young children.
The philosophy of Country Day School also includes the strong belief that children learn best when parents are active partners with the school in their childs education and development. From the Parent and Child program where parents and their young two year olds to attend combined play and parent education sessions to the many opportunities to participate in classroom and Parent Representative Organization (PRO) activities, parents at Country Day School feel part of a strong and supportive community.

The philosophy of The Country Day School is to provide the best in early childhood education. The programs focus is on developing childrens pleasure and excitement for learning, increasing their ability to problem solve, and fostering an awareness and enjoyment of their individual physical capabilities. The school also concentrates on helping each child develop a positive self-concept, respect and empathy for others, and the ability to become a constructive and contributing member of a group.
The foundation of the educational program at The Country Day School is an early childhood developmentally based curriculum that encourages the growth of childrens thought processes, the development of their conceptual understanding, and their ability to observe, analyze, predict, and make conclusions about the world. The program also strives to kindle in the children an appreciation for the beauty of our natural surroundings as well as an understanding of their responsibility to conserve and nurture their world. Out-of-doors learning activities are an important part of the curriculum and are integrated into many units of study.
At the school respect for diversity in its many forms is another important component of the program. The Country Day School helps children develop an appreciation of the diversity within the school community and the world at large. In addition to cultivating this respect and understanding, there is a strong emphasis on developing in children an appreciation of the diversity in learning styles and abilities. To support this mission, there is an emphasis on providing a wide range of activities in the classroom and encouraging children to initiate topics of interest to them. Within the entire curriculum is the encouragement of interactive learning and the development of positive relationships with adults and peers.
The Country Day School is also committed to a strong parent- school partnership based on the strong belief that children learn best when parents are active partners with the school in their childs education and development. Parents are encouraged to participate in the many opportunities offered at the school and become part of a strong and supportive community.
