Little Acorn Day School

Little Acorn Day School offers an excellent play-based preschool program with a highly enriching, individualized curriculum. Our curriculum follows a rich tradition of early childhood models and practices and believes in incorporating the very best aspects of those influences, which include but are not limited to: Howard Gardners Theory of Multiple Intelligences, The Hundred Languages of Children (world renowned Reggio Emilia early childhood model), Jean Piaget, Eric Erickson, and Lev Vygotskys developmental psychology theories, some ideas of Maria Montessori, and treasures the Director & teachers have discovered over years of teaching.

Teachers at Little Acorn are trained to arrange the classroom environment and plan lessons to engage and nurture all aspects of the whole childs development. This includes professional art instruction, daily music and movement (teacher plays guitar), hands-on, multi-sensory academics, (including Math-Their-Way, Whole Language and Phonics, and using both traditional & Montessori materials), science, drama, social skills instruction, cooperative learning, special enrichment guests, evening family events with musical class performances and more! In this rich environment, teachers facilitate learning, in joyful relationship with individual and small groups of children as they move at their own pace through these activity choices. Above all, teachers are positive leaders and role models and are very purposeful in their focus on empowering children to become life-long learners and responsible and loving citizens within a learning community.

The preschool meets daily from 9:30-1:00, with extended before and after school enrichment hours. We serve children from 2-1/2 to 6 years of age and we are open 7:00am-6:00pm year around. We offer full days only; two, three, or five days per week.

When you visit Little Acorn, you will find engaged and happy children who are led by a team of professional, loving, devoted, and highly skilled teachers, with years of experience in early childhood education. The Little Acorn Preschool Program is a mixed-aged, single classroom environment with a maximum of 24 children and 3 teachers (ratio: 8:1). The advantages of our mixed-aged grouping are many: First, our children usually have the same teachers for their entire stay here, which allows us to really get to know the children and to build continuously on their development from year to year. Next, it allows siblings to remain together. and finally, it provides for a family-like atmosphere where older children are encouraged to develop tolerance and leadership skills by acting as models and mentors to their younger peers. Weve found this to be an extremely powerful social learning model.
