We are a private school located in the metropolitan Detroit area. Founded in 1984 Montessori Stepping Stones is a school for children that is based on the principles and practices of Dr. Maria Montessori. Nurturing dedicated teachers create a stimulating child-centered environment that fosters independence self-esteem responsibility self-motivation and academic competency.
Child care at Montessori Stepping Stones is unique. Because we know children do best when they are provided consistent rules and structure our child care program is run and staffed by our highly trained and experienced classroom teachers. Your child will have access to the full Montessori Curriculum during his/her time in child care as well as additional extension materials. In this way we are able to offer the same respectful and peaceful environment you find in the classroom. At Montessori Stepping Stones we offer a complete Montessori experience from the classroom to the playground to child care.

The Montessori method was founded in 1907 by Dr. Maria Montessori the first woman in Italy to become a physician. She based her educational theories on scientific observation of children’s learning processes. Guided by her discovery that children learn spontaneously Dr. Montessori designed a special classroom environment in which children could freely choose from a multitude of developmentally appropriate lessons and materials. Now nearly a century later Montessori schools exist all over the world serving children from birth through adolescence.
At Montessori Stepping Stones we believe that independent choice and authentic interest inspire children to pursue knowledge for the intrinsic rewards rather than for external inducements. The Montessori learning environment combines freedom of choice within a structured interdisciplinary academic framework. Montessori is founded in respect and appreciation for the gifts of childhood. Children learn by doing and are lovers of purposeful work spontaneously chosen and carried out with joy.
Montessori education attends to the total development of the child – social emotional intellectual physical and spiritual. The aim of a Montessori education is to foster competent responsible adaptive citizens who are lifelong learners and problem solvers.
