At Montessori Schoolhouse we use a prepared environment which contributes to the child’s learning experience and love for knowledge. A day’s activities fall into one or many of the following areas which form an integrated, open-ended curriculum – one which permits each child to learn at his own pace, and to maximize his interests in specific areas.
PRACTICAL LIFE consists of physical tasks that help develop coordination, concentration, order, independence, and self-confidence. Absorption in these activities also gradually lengthens the child’s attention span.
The SENSORIAL area consists of activities that allow the child freedom for spontaneous discoveries as the child concentrates on the training of his senses.
MATHEMATICS begins in exercises using concrete materials. The child associates quantity with numerals. He sees not only the symbols, but he also holds a related quantity in his hands. Gradually the child moves from the concrete to the abstract.
The LANGUAGE area starts with a hand-on learning environment. Sand paper letters can be felt and traced by a child learning language. The hand and finger muscles are used to develop coordination with the brain in learning reading and writing.
GEOGRAPHY is introduced not only as a study of the world’s physical environment such as oceans, mountains, and rivers, but also the study of different cultures including their history.
SCIENCE in the Montessori environment starts with learning about the world surrounding the child. He explores the mystery of living and non-living things, identification of plants, leaf formations, and rocks. Simple experiments are used whenever possible to assist the child in his efforts to understand his environment.
ART gives the an opportunity to express himself creatively. Various media are at his disposal throughout the school year to give him a choice in his exploration.
PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES are essential for the development of large muscle control.
MUSIC stresses exploration of rhythm, sound, and pitch. Singing, recorded music, and the use of simple instruments enable the child to participate, listen, and express himself.

Montessori is a philosophy of child development, a scientific method for guiding the child’s education, and an approach to children that seeks to help each child discover his own potential.
To become fully developed physically, intellectually, and spiritually, the child must have freedom. This freedom is achieved through order and self-discipline. The child first sees the world as full of sights and sounds that appear chaotic. From this chaos the child gradually creates order and learns to distinguish among the impressions that assail the senses.
Dr. Maria Montessori created what she called “the prepared environment.” This is an ordered arrangement of sequential learning materials which are designed to be developmentally appropriate and aesthetically appealing. Used in the noncompetitive Montessori classroom, the materials allow each child to develop at his own individual rate.
“Never let the child risk failure until he has a reasonable chance of success,” said Dr. Montessori, understanding the need to acquire basic skills before participating in a competitive learning situation. The years between three and six are not only the prime time for laying an academic foundation, but most importantly, the years when a child learns the ground rules of human behavior most easily. These are the years to help child in preparing to take his place in society through the acquisition of good habits and manners.
